        Calling all High School and College students for the 2012 Urban Journalism Workshop!

        DFWABJ will present its 23nd annual Urban Journalism Workshop for high school and college students at Lincoln Humanities and Communications Magnet, 2826 Hatcher Street, beginning in January 2012.
             This 12-week workshop is open to students in Dallas, Tarrant, Ellis, Collin and Denton counties. Students receive hands-on experience working with seasoned professionals who have gained a reputation locally and nationally, as well as internationally.  The deadline for applications is January 20th, 2012. click the image to download an application.

        Meet NABJ's New Regional Directors

        Dear NABJ,    I am pleased to announce the appointments of Regional Directors for Regions I, II, and V. Joining the Board of Directors from Region I, will be Mara Schiavocampo, NBC News Correspondent; Region II, Corey Dade, NPR National Correspondent; and Region V, Mary Benton, Reporter, KPRC-TV (NBC Houston). These three individuals have long track records of dedication and leadership both locally and nationally, and will be great assets to this administration and to the association. Please find more on our new Regional Directors below.   I would also like to extend congratulations to Wesley Lowery, our new student representative after the special run-off election.   The Fall Board of Directors meeting will be in New Orleans, LA, Oct. 6-9, 2011, at the Hilton Riverside. This meeting is open to all members.

        Region I Director- Mara Schiavocampo
        Emmy Award-winning journalist Mara Schiavocampo is a correspondent for NBC News, filing reports for all platforms, including NBC Nightly News, The TODAY Show, msnbc and msnbc.com. A pioneering multi-media journalist, Mara was the first reporter of her kind in network television news, traveling the world producing, shooting, reporting and editing video pieces, blogging and shooting still photos.   While at NBC News, Mara also worked as a Special Correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show, filing international reports and appearing as an on-set guest, and as a contributor to "Essence Magazine", writing in-depth feature articles on stories of interest to the African American community.    Mara has served as co-chair of the NABJ Media Institute and as a student member she was a NABJ Student Projects participant as well as a recipient of a NABJ Scholarship.  As Region I Director, Mara is responsible for the region which covers the east-coast seaboard from Pennsylvania up to Maine.     Email-  mara.scampo@gmail.com

        Region II Director- Corey Dade
        Corey Dade is a national correspondent at NPR in Washington and has appeared as a news analyst on CNN, Fox News and CNBC. Corey has reported from the front lines of many of the biggest stories over the past decade, including Hurricane Katrina, the 2008 presidential election and the Tiger Woods scandal. He has worked as a reporter at the Miami Herald, Detroit Free Press, Boston Globe and most recently the Wall Street Journal.    He's a past president of the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, the oldest and one of the largest NABJ chapters. He was president of the Detroit affiliate when it was named the 2001 NABJ Chapter of the Year. Corey has also served on convention committees for NABJ and Unity: Journalists of Color.  As Region II Director, Corey Dade is responsible for the states of Delaware, Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.         Region V Director- Mary Benton
        Mary Benton is an award-winning journalist who knows Texas and politics like the back of her hand.    This Texas native was born and raised in Harlingen, in the Rio Grande Valley. Mary received her bachelor degree in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin. While at the university, she took a special interest in her government and political science classes and in the  student government organization on campus. She also kept a watchful eye on the political arena unfolding just down the street from the UT campus at the Texas State Capitol.    Mary is a past recipient of the "School Bell Award" given by the Texas State 
        Teachers Association for education reporting.
        She has been named Houston's Favorite TV reporter by the Houston Association of 
        Black Journalists, Houston's Best Reporter by the Houston Press Newspaper, a Houston YMCA Minority Achiever and in 2011 was selected by Rolling Out Magazine as one of Houston's Top 25 Women.   Mary is the current President of the Houston Association of Black Journalists.   As Region V Director,  Mary Benton is responsible for the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.         Email- mbenton@kprc.com

        Thanks for all who attended the "Fair or Foul" sports forum hosted by The Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists on February 9, 2010 at Harwood 609 Restaurant on 609 North Harwood Street in Downtown Dallas,  Just in case you missed it, check out part one and part two of the event featuring sports journalists and guest panelists, including KKDA's Chris Arnold, Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Senior Writer Clarence Hill, 411 Sports & Entertainment Publisher Cedric Lyons, Dallas Weekly's LaToya Hardaway, The Home Team DFW's Channing Curtis, and businessman and freelance journalist Thom Bailey. The panel also featured perspectives from Dr. Murray Fortner, chair of the sociology/psychology department at Tarrant County College.
